Garden and Landscape Manager
About the role
The great, magnificent, ever-changing outdoors. Here at the National Trust, we want people to keep coming back to our outdoor spaces, to find something new, different and exciting every time they visit. You’ll play a big part in this as the face of our outdoors strategy and management for the Cragside Estate.
Whether you’re making sure that we’re delivering the highest standards of presentation, conservation and interpretation in the Gardens, or finding new ways to get more people outdoors, your enthusiasm and knowledge will see us deliver unforgettable outdoor experiences, time after time. You’ll also look for new ways to generate funding and resources for outdoor projects, while getting more and more people actively involved in our conservation and environmental work. In fact, we want you to be full of fantastic ideas, with the energy and commitment to turn them into reality. You’ll have a talented, committed team of gardeners, rangers and volunteers to work with in delivering our vision for the outdoor experience, and you’ll be responsible for an annual expenditure budget of some £150k.
You’ll love the buzz that you get out of creating enjoyable, memorable outdoor experiences for everyone, and you’re already bursting with great ideas – with the confidence needed to inspire everyone around you to get behind them. You’ll have a relevant qualification in Horticulture, and experience in site management for conservation and public access, along with a good knowledge of plants and shrubs. You’re as good with budgets and figures as you are with people, able to meet targets and work well with a wide range of people. An excellent people manager, you’ll have proven performance management skills and thrive when leading a team of both staff and volunteers. You’ll need to be able to work frequent weekends and Bank Holidays, and occasional evenings.
We expect a lot, but we’ll offer a great deal in return, starting with stimulating and challenging work and the opportunity to help us achieve our bold ambitions. We value your contribution, recognise the importance of a work-life balance, and are committed to your continued development. You can also look forward to free admission to all our incredible places, plus a helpful 20% off at our shops, cafes and restaurants. But they’re just the benefits we can tell you about here. Here at the National Trust, we want even more people to enjoy our extraordinary places. We want people of all ages and backgrounds to get involved with them, be inspired by them, and love them as much as we do. That’s why we’ve put some bold ambitions in place. We want everyone in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to feel like a member of the National Trust and, by 2020, we want to have grown our membership to more than five million.
