Nursery Production and Grounds Maintenance Section Leader

Salary – circa. £20k

As a Section Leader within the Plants Division at Woodcote Green Garden Centre and Nurseries you will report directly to the Horticultural Senior Manager. You will have a close working relationship with your fellow Section Leaders, who will be primarily based on the shop floor.

This is a permanent, full-time position which is based on a minimum 40hr week. A normal working week would involve working 4 weekdays plus 1 weekend day, with opportunities for overtime at the peak times of year.

Areas of responsibility will include;

Nursery Production

  •  Direct responsibility for the health and quality of plant stock on the Nursery.
  •  Overseeing and organising all potting (including annual production schedules)
  •  Organise product selection in conjunction with Senior Manager and fellow Section Leaders.
  •  Sourcing and stock management of all necessary tools and machinery to aid Nursery production.
  •  Ensure all plants are shop ready – correctly labelled and priced.
  •  Oversee logistics for lifting and transporting Nursery stock to the retail shop.
  •  Ensuring that the working areas are safe, tidy and organised at all times for both yourself and your work colleagues.

Grounds Maintenance

  •  Maintenance of all public access areas, including the car park, main entrance to the Garden Centre and other areas determined by your Senior Manager. 
  • Maintenance to include grass cutting, planting, irrigation, hedge cutting, etc.
  •  Weed control throughout the site

Management of Staff

  •  You will lead, organise and motivate your team on a daily basis, in conjunction with the targets and guidance given by your Senior Manager.
  •  Ensure that your allocated staff are working efficiently and to their full potential.
  •  Identifying underperformers as well as recognising good performance within the team.
  •  Encourage and promote training within your team and for yourself.
  •  Take an active part in team meetings and encourage your staff to also do so.
  •  Striving to achieve your SMART targets and taking an active role in the setting of smart targets for your staff.

Financial Responsibilities

  •  Purchasing of requisites, pots, compost, etc.
  •  Ensuring plant stock is priced to meet financial targets.
  •  Liaising with the finance team as necessary to ensure suppliers are paid accurately and on time. 
  •  The position will involve some computer skills to include email, MS word,  MS excel, etc and the use of the bespoke G7 retail system, for which training will be given.

General

  •  Ensure full co-operation with the Daily Duty Manager and the allocated jobs for your team.
  •   Various Ad-hoc projects set by your Senior Manager.
  •  You should be available (sometimes at short notice) to work not only on the Nursery but also in the retail areas, especially at the peak trading times of year.
  •  Duties may include some till shifts and handling of money.
